Tally form responses

Analyze Tally form responses, quote by quote

Tally’s Insights chart your choice and rating questions. The text answers are where people tell you why. Download the submissions CSV and RawQuotes names what people keep writing about, with the exact answers under every insight.

The reasons are in the text answers, one submission at a time

The chart shows how people rated you. The text box under it says why, in a different way every time: “too slow on mobile”, “couldn’t find the export”, “fine, just pricey”. Scrolling the Submissions tab shows them one by one, and the loudest one sticks, not the most common one.

From Tally to insights in three steps

1
Download the submissions
In Tally, open your form, go to the Submissions tab and click Download CSV. Partial submissions have an export of their own in Tally.
2
Upload the file
The Tally preset recognises the file by Submission ID, Respondent ID and Submitted at, and takes the date from Submitted at. You then check which columns hold the text answers.

Read what repeats
Every quote under an insight carries the date it was submitted in Tally, so last month’s answers stay in last month.

What the Tally preset reads

The export is recognised by three of its column names. The date comes from Submitted at; the text comes from the columns of your questions.
Column in the exportWhat RawQuotes does with it
The columns of your questionsThe text insights are counted from. Imported into a survey, each column goes to the question with the same text or one you pick; imported as a general source, you pick the column, with the longest answers suggested.
Submitted atThe date. It decides which week and month the item is counted in.
Submission ID, Respondent IDOnly used to recognise the export.
Every other columnLeft out, unless you map a column to a question of the survey yourself.

A linear scale or rating column can go to a rating question of the survey, as long as every number fits that question’s scale. A row with a number outside the scale is rejected as a whole, and the preview says which row and why.

What the text boxes turn into

A short list of sentences, each naming something people keep writing in your text questions, with a count of the submissions behind it. Open one to read the answers themselves, word for word: the part a chart of choices cannot show.

From here on, every source works the same. All sources in a project feed one set of insights, and each insight shows how many items came from each one. The list under an insight is exactly as long as its count, a month can be compared with the one before, and only the insight’s name and description are written by the model, labelled as generated. How the analysis works

Panel screenshot: the insight "The afternoon session ran too long without a break", labelled Generated and Problem, backed by 19 rows from a workshop feedback form, opened into three verbatim quotes, one of them in Polish, with their dates and a link to see all 19 answers

Example data

Ten submissions before anything is named

Each submission in the CSV is one response. With fewer than ten complete responses in a period, RawQuotes shows how many you have and how many are missing, links to them, and names no insight yet.

Questions about Tally form responses

Does RawQuotes connect to Tally?

No. You download the CSV from the Submissions tab and upload it, and that file is all RawQuotes reads.

Tally already has Insights. Why upload the file?

Tally’s Insights chart choice questions and work out NPS and CSAT scores for you. RawQuotes reads the text answers and names what repeats in them, with the answers under each insight.

Can I import last year’s submissions?

Yes. Every submission keeps its Submitted at date and lands in that week and month. Periods that were already counted pick the old submissions up when you recompute them (Basic and Pro).
